BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Garrett Black had a team-best two hits to lead the Ohio University baseball team to a 7-6 win over Bowling Green Saturday afternoon at Steller Field.
Black (Lima, Ohio) also scored a run and drove in an RBI. The reigning Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week was one of six different players to collect hits.
Sophomore John Adryan (Delran, N.J.) also chipped in offensively with a pair of RBI.
Sophomore Jake Miller (Westerville, Ohio) picked up the win after he came on in relief in the fifth inning and worked 1.2 innings, scattered three hits and allowed just one earned run. Freshman Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) started the game and worked 5.1 innings, struck out two and allowed four earned runs.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Ohio scored all four runs without recording a single hit. Ohio's four-run scoring effort in the first inning knocked BG starter Brett Fitzwater out of the game.
Bowling Green responded by scoring two runs in the second and one in the third to trim Ohio's lead to one at 4-3.
Ohio came right back with a run in the fourth thanks to an RBI double down the right field line, which plated freshman Tyler Finkler (Olmsted Falls, Ohio). Finkler got on base after he singled down the right field line.
Over the next two innings, the Falcons outscored Ohio 3-1 to even the score at six. In the seventh, Ohio reclaimed the lead for good as it scored one run on two hits. Junior Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) tallied the go-ahead run thanks to an RBI single by Adryan. Wells got on base after he doubled off the right field line.
The Bobcats shut out the Falcons and limited Bowling Green to just one hit over the final three innings. Freshman Corey Wells (Lexington, Ky.) collected his fifth save on the year after he struck out one, did not allow a hit and did not allow a run.
Ohio will go for the series victory tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Steller Field. Sophomore Connor Sitz (Westerville, Ohio) will take the mound for Ohio. Fans can listen to the game live on WOUB 1340 am. Ryan Boyd will have the call.
