AKRON, Ohio - Senior Brent Choban threw his fourth complete game of the season to guide the Ohio University baseball team (24-25; 13-9 MAC) to a 4-3 triumph over Akron Friday afternoon at Jackson Field.
Choban (Rittman, Ohio) allowed seven hits, walked five and struck out four as he improved to 7-4 on the year.
Offensively, Ohio outhit Akron 8-7 with freshman Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) leading the way with a pair of hits.
Ohio struck first as it plated one run in the first inning after senior captain Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.) scored from third base after freshman Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) grounded out to second base. Newton got on base as he led off the first inning with a triple to right center field.
The Bobcats struck again in the fourth as it plated three runs in the top half of the fourth. All three runs came with two outs in the frame. Freshman Cody Gaertner (Allison Park , Pa.) got the inning started as he singled to center field.
After sophomore Scott White (Springboro, Ohio) was hit by a pitch, freshman Ian Mezlak (Lorain, Ohio) would drive in Gaertner with a single up the middle that scored Gaertner from second. White would later come into to score from third following a wild pitch. Mezlak came into score from third following a single to shortstop by sophomore Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio).
Akron fought back with a pair of runs in the fifth cut to cut the Bobcats' lead to two. Following the Zips two-run fifth, Choban held the Zip scoreless for the next three innings.
In the ninth, Akron cut the Bobcats' lead to one at 4-3 and had the tying and go-ahead run at second and third, respectively, but were unable drive them across as Ohio secured the victory.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Ohio senior pitcher Jason Moulton will take on Akron's Scott Foster.
