ATHENS, Ohio - Junior Tyler Backstrom drove in a pair of runs and pitched a pair of scoreless innings to lead the White team past the Green team 8-2 in game one of the Green and White series at Bob Wren Stadium.
Backstrom (Columbus, Ohio) went 2-for-3 and earned the victory on the mound. He also scored a run. Redshirt freshman Joseph Sekula (Warren, Ohio) also had a strong evening at the plate for the White team as he collected a pair of hits, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Freshman Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) led the way for the Green team as he notched a game-high three hits. Junior pitcher Seth Streich (Ridgeway, Pa.) started the game for the Green team and worked a scoreless first three innings, holding the White team to just one hit.
The Green team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning thanks to a single into right field by Wells which scored junior Chandler Geller (Austin, Texas) from third base.
The White team responded two innings later as it plated three runs in the top half of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Backstrom highlighted the frame for the White as he singled into right field which scored junior J.R. Reynolds (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Jensen Painter (Willshire, Ohio).
Following a scoreless bottom half by the Green squad, the White team added four more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 advantage. Both teams added a run in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.
Game two of the Green and White series begins Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Bob Wren Stadium. Admission to the Fall Series is free to the general public.
