Ohio Downed at Home by Xavier, 15-10
Freshman Nick Squires collected a season-high five hits, but it was not enough as the Ohio University baseball team (5-22, 2-4) fell to Xavier (11-13), 15-10 in a high scoring affair Tuesday evening at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Ohio University baseball team returns to action on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. as it travels to Xavier for its mid-week matchup at Hayden Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
NOTING THE BOBCATS
-The Bobcats have four players that are batting .300-or-better. Freshman Mitch Longo leads the squad with a batting average of .410.
-Longo ranks in the top five of three Mid-American Conference statistical categories.
-Freshman Jake Rudnicki owns a team-best 3.79 ERA.
-Ohio is one of six teams in the country that have five true freshman in its everyday lineup this season.
-Freshman starter Jake Roehn ranks fourth in the MAC in strikeouts with 28.
-Junior newcomer Spencer Sapp leads the MAC in overall appearances.
-The Bobcats have collected 10-or-more hits in seven of their 17 games this season.
-Ohio will be in search of its third road win this season.
-Ohio returns to action following its three series with St. Bonaventure. The Bobcats dropped all three games last weekend to SBU.
-The Bobcats will look to put an end to its four-game losing streak. Ohio has not lost five games in-a-row all year.
-The Bobcats were scheduled to play a four-game series with St. Bonaventure, but the game was cancelled because of poor weather conditions in the Athens, Ohio area.
-Ohio has had six games cancelled this year.
THE PITCHING MATCHUP
Tuesday: (Ohio) Jake Miller vs. (XU) Eric Stiene
Ohio will faceoff against Xavier for the 73rd time in school history on Tuesday. The Bobcats lead the all-time series 51-21. The two teams met last season with the Musketeers earning a 15-10 victory inside Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio.
The Musketeers are coming off a series win over Toledo this past weekend. Xavier dropped game one, 3-0, but bounced back to win games two and three, 1-0 and 7-1. Joe Forney had two big games for XU, including scoring the winning run in the first game on Saturday. Nearly spotless outings by starters Adam Hall (2-0) and Vinny Nittoli (3-0) on Saturday held Toledo without an earned run and set up the Musketeers for the victories. Patrick Jones has a team-high .342 batting average on the year for the Musketeers, driving in four RBIs and scoring three runs.
LAST TIME OUT
Ohio dropped three straight games this past weekend to St. Bonaventure in its first home series of the year. As a team, the Bobcats batted .252 and were outscored 44-13. Sophomore John Adryan and junior Jake Madsen were the only Ohio players to post a .300-or-better average this past weekend. The Bobcats struggled on the mound as they posted an earned run average of 11.33. They also committed an uncharacteristic 10 errors over the three-game series. Ohio entered the weekend series with just 16 errors through 12 games.
