Ohio Defeated at Xavier, 9-4
Senior Jensen Painter hit a home run and drove in a pair of RBI, but it was not enough as the Ohio University baseball team (23-25) dropped a 9-4 decision to Xavier Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field.
The Ohio University baseball team (5-21) returns to action Tuesday night as it welcomes Xavier to Bob Wren Stadium for a midweek matchup against the Musketeers. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
NOTING THE BOBCATS
-Ohio's matchup with Xavier will mark the sixth time in the last 15 days the Bobcats have played an opponent from the state of Ohio.
-The Bobcats are in the midst of a seven-game stretch where they will play six games on the road.
-Ohio ranks in the top five of the Mid-American Conference in both home runs (9) and doubles (38).
-Sophomore Jake Madsen leads the Bobcats with 34 hits.
-Madsen currently owns a team-best .393 batting average with runners in scoring position. He also has a team best 17 RBI on the year.
-In total, Madsen leads the team in nine offensive categories.
-Senior Dan Schmidt had his team and season best 12-game hitting streak snapped this past Sunday at Eastern Michigan.
-Schmidt did draw a walk in the Bobcats' series finale against Eastern Michigan as he got on base for the 13th-consecutive game.
-Sophomore Cody Gaertner leads the squad with 16 runs scored on the year.
-Junior Logan Cozart leads the MAC with 17 appearances on the year.
-Junior Sean Kennedy picked up his team-best third win on the year this past Friday at Eastern Michigan.
THE PITCHING MATCHUPS
Tuesday: RHP Jake Miller (Ohio) vs. TBA (XU)
Ohio will faceoff against Xavier for the 72nd time in school history on Tuesday. The Bobcats lead the all-time series 51-20. The two teams met last season with the Musketeers earning a 9-4 victory in Cincinnati.
The Musketeers (10-13) Xavier opened A-10 play against St. Bonaventure in a three-game series last weekend. XU started with a 12-3 win on Friday and followed with 11-2 and 15-0 wins in Saturday's doubleheader. Xavier pounded out 57 hits and tallied 38 runs in its series with St. Bona, raising its season scoring average to 5.95 runs per game. Centerfielder Mark Elwell leads the team in batting (.400) and runs scored (16) and is tied for the team-high in doubles (8). Elwell's eight doubles ranks him 86th in the country and his .40 doubles per game average ranks 59th.
RECAPPING THE EASTERN MICHIGAN SERIES
The Ohio University baseball team dropped two of three games this last weekend at Eastern Michigan. The Bobcats opened the series with a 5-3 win last Friday, but fell 5-4 in game two and 13-6 in game three. As a team, Ohio batted .250, but was outscored 21-15. Junior left-handed pitcher Sean Kennedy picked up the only win for the Bobcats on the weekend. Kennedy earned the win as he came on in relief in game one to pick up his team-best third win on the year. Senior Ben Otto led all Bobcats offensively as he batted .400 with two doubles, drove in two runs and scored four runs.
