2008 Baseball Team Awards Announced

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio baseball team concluded the season by handing out the 2008 Baseball Team Awards. A total of seven awards were given to six different players, with Zach Hartle the lone two-time winner. Hartle (Toledo, Ohio) took home the award for Most Valuable Defensive Player and also was given the 2008 Co-Captain Award alongside Matt Smith. Hartle tallied a .939 fielding percentage at shortstop, making just 18 errors in 55 starts at one of the most difficult positions to field on the diamond. He also tallied 173 assists and 103 putouts. Brandon Besl (Cincinnati, Ohio) took home the Frank Baumholtz Award for the team's highest batting average after hitting .369 this season. The junior third baseman tallied 69 hits in 187 at-bats, inlcuding 20 doubles and nine home runs. Matt Stiffler (Bellbrook, Ohio) received the Bob Wren Offensive Efficiency Award after leading the Bobcats in hits, triples, home runs and RBI in his final season with the Bobcats. Stiffler had the highest efficiency rating on the team, which is based on a formula that takes into account batting average, RBI and other offensive statistics. After the season, he was selected in the 27th round by the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Junior starter Chris Rigo (Westlake, Ohio) was given the Bill Toadvine Pitching Efficiency Award after leading the Bobcats with six victories this season and also paced the team in innings pitched, strike outs and batting average against. Very much like the offensive efficiency formula is the pitching efficiency formula. Stats such as earned run average, wins and strikeouts are used in the pitching formula. The final award handed out at the team's banquet was the Bob Adams Outstanding Sophomore Award, which was presented to rightfielder Marc Krauss (Deshler, Ohio). Krauss batted .332 in his second season in Athens with 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 54 RBI. The most valuable defesive player and sophomore awards are voted on by the coaches while the other honors, exluding the co-captains awards, are based on statistical performance. 2008 Baseball Team Awards
