Ohio Baseball Selects Larry Day as Assistant Coach

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University baseball head coach Rob Smith announced today the addition of former Vanderbilt baseball volunteer assistant coach Larry Day as its new assistant coach. In his new capacity, Day will work with the Bobcat pitchers and catchers.

Day arrives in Athens after spending the previous five seasons working with the Vanderbilt Commodore catchers and assisting with the hitters.

"I am very excited to add Larry Day to the program," Smith said. "He will make a great impact for us on the field and in recruiting. Not only is he a great coach, but he has been a part of a great program at Vanderbilt and It was important to me that we continue to surround our players with coaches who understand what is required to build a championship team."

In his final season at Vanderbilt, Day helped the Commodores post a 54-12 overall record and a Southeastern Conference best 26-3 mark and an appearance in the NCAA Super Regional. In addition, Day helped Vanderbilt catcher Spencer Navin post career highs in average, home runs, RBI and on base percentage. Following the year, Navin was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Since Day's arrival Vanderbilt has enjoyed unprecedented success going to the school's first College World Series, winning a Southeastern Conference championship and four NCAA Regional championships along with four SEC Tournament runner-up finishes and three NCAA Super Regional appearances.

A 2007 graduate of Connecticut, Day was a four-year starter for the Huskies and earned All-Big East honors his junior year. He was drafted in the by the New York Yankees in the 2007 draft and played for the Gulf Coast League Yankees and the Charleston River Dogs winning a league title with the GCL Yankees.

Day recorded 37 assists as catcher in his senior year at UConn. He hit .332 with 51 RBI as a junior, earning All-Big East plaudits. Day hit .298 and drove in 22 runs as sophomore and was a two-year captain at UConn. He played for Orleans in the Cape Cod League in 2006.

The former St. John's Prep standout completed a summer coaching baseball for Orleans of the Cape Cod League in 2008.

Day replaces former Ohio assistant coach Chris Berry, who moved on to Florida Gulf Coast to serve as the Eagles' new pitching coach.
