Prior to Ohio Smith played in all but one contest during the 2009-10 season for St. Louis, while averaging 2.5 points and 2.8 rebounds, to go along with 32 blocks. The 6-7 forward shot 58 percent from the field and was a key contributor off the bench for SLU. He scored in double figures three times, including a career-high 15 against Charlotte and 11 against Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green. Smith also snared a career-high 11 rebounds against NCAA Tournament participant Richmond.
High School Smith was named the Ohio Capital Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-Central District after averaging 18.8 points and being ranked by Scouting Ohio as the No. 12 senior in the state while at Grove City. He was one of 15 players chosen for the Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game, and was selected to play in the Ohio North-South All-Star Game along with being a member of Lebron James' King James Shooting Stars AAU team. Smith also registered a triple-double in the District I championship game with 26 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocks.
