CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior guard Nick Kellogg scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Ohio University men's basketball team (23-10) to a 63-55 victory over Miami University (13-18) in the Second Round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament Wednesday night inside Quicken Loans Arena.
Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) finished the game by going 8-of-17 from the field. He also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists.
Juniors Javarez Willis (Homer, La.) and Maurice Ndour (Mbour, Senegal) also finished in double figures as they tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively. Willis recorded a game-high three 3-pointers, while Ndour pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
With the win, Ohio advances to the Quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament for the 10th-consecutive season. The Bobcats also improved to 39-26 all-time in the league championship. In addition, Ohio's victory over Miami marked the third time this season it has defeated the Redhawks. The Bobcats have claimed the last seven meetings versus Miami.
Ohio opened up a 9-3 lead at the 17:07 mark of the first half thanks to a 3-pointer from the corner by Willis. The Redhawks responded with a 9-1 spurt to take a 12-10 advantage with just under 12:30 to go in the first half.
The Bobcats followed the Redhawk runs with one of their own as they outscored Miami 11-2 over the next six minutes to take a 21-14 advantage. Ohio's run was capped by a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Ndour.
Miami closed out the first half by outscoring the Bobcats 9-6 over the final five minutes. Despite the first half run, Ohio still took a 27-23 lead into the locker room.
Kellogg led all first half scorers as he poured in 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Ndour also posted eight points.
In the second half, Miami quickly evened the count at 27 apiece with 18:00 minutes to go in the game. From that point, no team would lead by more than three points for the next seven minutes.
Miami freshman Jaryd Eustace changed that trend with a 3-pointer to give the Redhawks a four-point lead at 43-39 with 10:49 to play. Ohio fought back with back-to-back 3-pointers by Stevie Taylor (Gahanna, Ohio) to re-claim the lead 45-43.
The Redhawks would not go away as Eustace and Geovonie McKnight each scored a layup to give Miami a 47-45 lead. A pair of Willis 3-pointers gave the Bobcats a 51-47 lead with 5:34 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats did not trail for the final five minutes of the game as Ohio secured the victory.
With the victory, Ohio's senior class of Kellogg, Jon Smith, T.J. Hall, Ricardo Johnson and Travis Wilkins became the all-time winningest class in Ohio history. The quintet has combined for 95 wins during their time in Athens.
Ohio will take on fourth-seeded Akron in the Quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament on Thursday. The teams split a pair of meetings this season, with each squad winning on the other's home floor.
Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. inside Quicken Loans Arena.
