ATHENS, Ohio- The Ohio men's basketball team (5-0) outscored Richmond (4-2) 46-18 in the second half to propel the Bobcats to a convincing 73-48 victory over the Spiders Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Senior guard Walter Offutt(Indianapolis, Ind.) led all Ohio players with 16 points, connecting on 5-of-11 shots from the field. Offutt was one of four Ohio players that finished in double figures.
Senior guard D.J. Cooper (Chicago, Ill.), junior forward Jon Smith (Columbus, Ohio) and junior guard Nick Kellogg(Westerville, Ohio) finished the game with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Smith's 13 points tied a career-high.
Senior forward Ivo Baltic(Kansas City, Mo.) also chipped in as he led the team in assists (7) and rebounds (9). His seven assists were a career-high.
Defensively, Ohio held the Spiders to a season-low 48 points, limiting Richmond to just 35.1 percent shooting for the game and held six players scoreless. Richmond came into the game, averaging 74.8 points per game.
With the win, Ohio improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 1969-70 campaign and captured its 14th straight win at home. Ohio is the only undefeated team remaining in the Mid-American Conference. In addition, the Bobcats' 73-point effort marked the eighth-consecutive time Ohio has scored 70 points-or-more, dating back to last season.
Richmond jumped out to a seven-point lead at the 11:03 mark of the first half, leading 16-9, but the Bobcats would respond with a 14-5 run to take a 23-21 lead at the 4:25 mark. Kellogg scored five points during the stretch with junior T.J. Hall(Gainesville, Fla.) capping the run with a 3-pointer to give the Bobcats their first lead since the 15 minute mark of the first half.
The Spiders responded by going on a 9-4 run to close out the first half and take a 30-27 lead going into the locker room.
Ohio trailed for five and a half minutes in the second half, but the `Cats would take the lead for good at the 14:03 mark thanks to a 3-pointer from Cooper, which made the count 39-38.
The Bobcats would go on to connect on four more 3-pointers to make the count 51-41 with 10:53 remaining. Ohio closed the game with a 22-7 run in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
The Ohio University men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday as it takes on St. Bonaventure at the Convocation Center.
