POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -
In its first road game of the season, the Ohio men's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 69-63 victory at Marist on Tuesday.
The Bobcats were led by four players in double figures with Leon Williams and Mychal Green leading the way with 15 points each. Jeff Halbert and Jeremy Fears both added 11 points to the winning effort as Fears also dished out a game-high six assists. Williams paced Ohio on the boards with nine rebounds.
After shooting out to a 5-0 early lead, the Bobcats found themselves trailing 17-12 at the 11:28 mark but went on a 13-0 run to take a 25-17 advantage with 7:14 to go until halftime. Junior guard Whitney Davis scored seven points during the run and made a steal that resulted in a Fears three-pointer as well.
The Red Foxes (2-2) climbed back, though, and had the gap down to three before Halbert hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Ohio a 34-28 edge at intermission.
Two three-pointers by Green sandwiched around a Williams layup at the start of the second half pushed the Bobcat lead to 14 points, marking its highest point. Despite two more Halbert treys in the second half, Marist gradually closed the gap, though, until it was 65-63 with 32 seconds remaining.
After Fears missed the front end of a one-and-one, Red Fox guard Jared Jordan - who had scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field - missed a short jumper and its follow-up, allowing Ohio to regain possession. With just five seconds left, Bobcat forward Sonny Troutman was fouled and sank both free throws to secure the victory. Green then stole the inbounds pass and Fears added an insurance layup as the clock expired.
For the game, Ohio shot 26-of-61 (42.6 percent) from the field, including 8-for-20 (40.0 percent) from behind the arc and 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from the line. Marist, meanwhile, was 23-of-60 (38.3 percent) from the field, 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) from three-point range and a perfect 10-for-10 in free throws.
The Bobcats recorded six steals that resulted in a 21-9 edge in points off turnovers but the Red Foxes held the advantage in rebounds (43-36) and blocks (4-1).
Davis provided eight points for Ohio while Troutman finished with seven points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Johnnie Jackson also chipped in two points for the Bobcats.
Ohio continues its East Coast road trip Saturday with a 6 p.m. game at Rhode Island. The Rams defeated Manhattan 78-69 on Tuesday to improve to 5-1.
