ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University men's basketball team (15-5, 6-0) looks to extend its winning streak to a season-best eight games Saturday at MAC East-leading Akron (16-4, 7-0 MAC).
Ohio can take over first place in the East Division with a win over the Zips.
The game will be televised across the nation on ESPNU. Dan Gutowsky will handle play-by-play duties while Malcolm Huckaby will serve as analyst. In addition,"Voice of the Bobcats"Russ Eisenstein and Rob Cornelius will call the game live on the Ohio IMG Sports Network powered by Horizon, with an audio stream available on OhioBobcats.com. Pre-game coverage will begin 30 minutes prior to tip (4:30 p.m.).
Last time out, Ohio edged Kent State, 69-68, on Saturday (Jan. 26) at the M.A.C. Center. Ohio used two late defensive stops and two critical free throws from senior guard D.J. Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) to clinch the victory. It marked just the third time in the last 16 seasons that Ohio has won at the M.A.C. Center.
With the win, Ohio is 6-0 in the MAC for the first time since 1973-74 and 3-0 in conference road games for the first time since 1992-93.
Cooper (23) and senior forward Reggie Keely (20) accounted for 43 of the Bobcats' 69 points, while junior guard Nick Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) added 10 points. Cooper also led the team with five assists and three steals. During the game, Cooper moved into a tie for 20th place on the all-time NCAA Division I assists list and recorded his 300th career steal. With 14 more steals, the 2013 Cousy Award Finalist will move into 25th place on the all-time NCAA Division I steals ledger.
Ohio shot 50 percent from the floor (28-56) for the seventh time in eight games on Saturday. The Bobcats are 11-0 this season when they shoot 50 percent or better from the field.
With a win against Akron on Saturday, Ohio will move to 7-0 in MAC games for the first time since the 1960-61 season.
Scouting The Zips (16-4, 7-0 MAC)
The Bobcats and Zips will meet for the 67th time on the hardwood Saturday. The Green and White hold a 35-31 (.530) edge in the all-time series and have won five of the last six meetings. Ohio and Akron first met during the 1911-12 season, with the Zips earning a 21-18 win in Athens. Last season, Ohio won two of three games against the Zips. The `Cats earned an 85-61 victory in Athens on Feb. 26, 2012, and fell in Akron, 68-63, on Jan. 14, 2012.
The `Cats upended the Zips, 64-63, in the MAC Championship game to advance to the 2012 NCAA Tournament on March 10. Ohio has defeated Akron in the MAC Championship game in two of the past three seasons to earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
The Zips have posted a 16-4 record this season and are 10-0 at James A. Rhodes Arena. Akron leads the MAC with a 16-4 record and a 7-0 mark in conference action. Last time out, the Zips won at Bowling Green, 68-55, on Wednesday (Jan. 30) to capture their 12th-straight victory. Senior center Zeke Marshall led Akron with 15 points in the contest.
Marshall ranks first on the team with 12.8 points per game and is fifth in the nation with 3.7 blocks per contest. Junior Demetrius Treadwell is Akron's leading rebounder (7.5 rpg) while junior guard Alex Abreu paces the team with 5.8 assists per contest. Head coach Keith Dambrot is in his ninth season at Akron, during which he's compiled a 200-91 (.687) record.
