ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Head Coach Jim Christian announced the promotion of Aaron Fuss to assistant coach and the addition of Chip Cunningham as director of basketball operations.
A member of former head coach John Groce's initial staff at Ohio, Fuss has been the Director of Basketball Operations since 2009. He oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Bobcat program, including scheduling, on-campus recruiting, academic monitoring and video coordination. Fuss was also on the staff for both the 2010 and 2012 seasons, which culminated in Mid-American Conference Championships.
The Pataskala, Ohio, native came to Athens after serving as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Watkins Memorial High School in his home town. While at Watkins, Fuss served as the director of opponent scouting while also leading the team in offseason skill-instruction sessions.
In addition to his duties at WMHS, Fuss also concurrently served as head coach of the Columbus Hawks, a U-14 AAU team based in Columbus. In 2008, the Hawks won their second-straight USSSA state title and took runner-up honors at the state AAU tournament.
Fuss got his start at OSU in 2001 as a manager under former Buckeye head coach Jim O'Brien and by the 2004-05 season, the first with current Buckeyes' head coach Thad Matta and Groce on the bench, Fuss worked his way up to head manager. The 2005-06 campaign saw Fuss move up to the graduate assistant level at Ohio State and in his final year on the OSU staff, he served in the dual role of graduate assistant and assistant video coordinator.
He assisted in Ohio State's run to the NCAA title game by writing advanced scouts of each opponent, which the coaching staff used to develop game strategy. During that season, Fuss also assisted the coaching staff with all aspects of recruiting, including hosting campus visits and preparing facilities.
An all-county selection as a senior at Watkins Memorial, Fuss earned a B.S. in agricultural education/agri-business from Ohio State in 2005, as well as an M.A. in sport management in 2007. He was married to the former Jill Samples in the spring of 2009.
Christian also announced the hiring of Chip Cunningham as Ohio's new Director of Basketball Operations. Cunningham served as video coordinator and graduate assistant at TCU since the 2009 season.
Cunningham oversaw all video and technology operations in the men's basketball department, including game film exchange, preparing video scouting reports and maintaining a video library of drills and plays. He also supervised all student managers, oversaw game day set up and management and organized all recruiting databases.
Prior to TCU, Cunningham served as the assistant coach at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas for one season. He ran all offseason individual workouts and handled the on-floor coaching of all post players. Cunningham also served as the in-state recruiting coordinator.
During the 2007-08 season, Cunningham was assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Bishop T.K. Gorman High School in Tyler, Texas. From 2005-07, Cunningham served as the head coach of JAMODI, a U-17 AAU squad also located in Tyler.
Cunningham earned a B.A. in sociology with a minor in english from TCU in 2011.
