2013-14 MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio University men’s basketball team announced its 2013-14 schedule Tuesday which features 14 games against teams that qualified for post-season play in 2012-13 and a marquee intra-state matchup with Ohio State.
The Bobcats will host 17 home games this season and suit up for 14 matchups away from the Convocation Center. Ohio also will host four games as part of the Ohio Classic. In all, the Bobcats will play 11 games against teams that won at least 20 games last season.
"This is a very competitive schedule, with games against a number of teams that should reach the postseason," head coach Jim Christian said. "Our non-conference slate will certainly prepare us well for the MAC portion of the schedule."
The Green & White open the season with an exhibition contest against Division II opponent Ashland on Nov. 2 inside the Convocation Center, before kicking off the regular season at home against Northern Iowa on Nov. 9. The Panthers return nine letter winners from a 2012-13 squad that finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference (21-15, 11-7 MVC) and advanced to the semifinals of the College Insider Tournament.
From there, the Bobcats make the quick trip up US-33 for the much-anticipated non-conference matchup with Ohio State on Nov. 12 in Columbus (8 p.m.). The Bobcats and Buckeyes have not met on the basketball court since the 1994-95 campaign. Ohio State reached the NCAA Elite Eight last season and returns four starters from that team, including All-America guard Aaron Craft.
The difficult early season slate continues on Nov. 17, as the Bobcats host 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Valparaiso at the Convocation Center. The game is Ohio’s first in the Ohio Classic. The Horizon League champion Crusaders were 26-8 in 2012-13 and have made the post-season in three straight campaigns.
After a Nov. 20 contest at MEAC foe Morgan State, the Bobcats return to the Convo for game two of the Ohio Classic against in-state foe Heidelberg on Nov. 23.
Ohio wraps up the Ohio Classic with home matchups against Mercer (Nov. 26) and Evansville (Nov. 30). The Bears won the 2013 Atlantic Sun regular season title and earned a berth in the NIT after falling to Florida Gulf Coast in the A-Sun Tournament Final. The Purple Aces also advanced to the post-season in 2012-13, reaching the semifinals of the CIT.
The ‘Cats play at Horizon League foe Oakland (a 2013 CIT participant) on Dec. 7 before hosting Alabama A&M on Dec. 14. The Bobcats then play their marquee non-conference home game as the University of Massachusetts pays a visit to the Convo on Dec. 18. The Minutemen are expected to be one of the pre-season favorites in the A-10 this season after reaching the NIT in 2012-13.
The Bobcats wrap up their December slate with a matchup at 2013 CIT participant Richmond (Dec. 22) and a home game against Longwood on Dec. 30. Ohio defeated Richmond last season at the Convo, 73-48.
In a return game from Ohio’s 2012 BracketBuster matchup, the Bobcats will play at UNC-Asheville on Jan. 4 (2 p.m.) before opening MAC play on Jan. 8 at East Division foe Kent State.
The MAC schedule will include 18 games this season for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats will play Toledo and Western Michigan twice in 2013-14, in addition to their usual home-and-home series with East Division opponents.
Ohio hosts rival Akron on the eve of the spring semester (Jan. 12), before taking on West Division foe Ball State on Jan. 15 at the Convo.
Other MAC home matchups include Bowling Green (Jan. 22), Central Michigan (Jan. 29), Toledo (Feb. 1) and the “Battle of the Bricks” matchup against Miami on Feb. 8. Ohio also hosts Western Michigan (Feb. 19), Buffalo (Feb. 26) and Kent State (March 1).
The team’s road league dates include games against Northern Illinois (Jan. 18), Eastern Michigan (Jan. 25), Western Michigan (Feb. 5), Toledo (Feb. 12), Buffalo (Feb. 15), Akron (Feb. 22), Bowling Green (March 4) and Miami (March 8).
