ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio's D.J. Cooper has been chosen as one of the 50 players on the John R. Wooden Preseason Watch List. He is the only player from the Mid-American Conference tabbed by the committee.

Cooper earned All-MAC First Team honors last season after leading Ohio to the Sweet 16 and a near-upset of No. 1 North Carolina. Adding to his honors, Cooper was also a Cousy Award Finalist, Lute Olson All-America Team selection and a NABC Division I All-District 14 Second Team choice last year. Already this season, he was named as a Preseason All-MAC selection.

The Chicago native was named the 2012 MAC Tournament MVP after averaging 19.7 points and 6.7 assists for the Bobcats. He broke the Ohio career mark for assists and needs one more steal to hold the Bobcat career mark in that category. Cooper has a realistic shot this season to become the first player in Division I history to finish with 2,000 points, 900 assists, 650 rebounds and 300 steals for a career.

The John R. Wooden Award has been distributed since 1977, when UCLA’s Marques Johnson captured it. Media members vote on a list of candidates established by the award’s national advisory board toward the end of the season.

Freshmen and transfers are not eligible, but they can be added to the list as the season progresses and ultimately win the award. Former Kentucky star Anthony Davis won the honor last season.
