ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University men's basketball team (4-0) will look to stay unbeaten as it returns to action Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center against the University of Richmond Spiders (4-1). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
Ohio enters the game in search of its first 5-0 start since the 1969-70 campaign when it won its first seven games to start the year. The `Cats will also look to pick up their 14th-consecutive win at home dating back to last season.
Saturday afternoon's matchup with be the first all-time meeting between Ohio and Richmond.
Ohio has five players averaging 10.0 points-or-more per game. The Bobcats are the only team in the Mid-American Conference that has five players averaging double figures in scoring. Ohio is also the only undefeated team remaining in the league.
The Bobcats return to the hardwood for the first time since their 75-67 victory over Hampton Tuesday night at home. Senior guard Walter Offutt led the way for the Bobcats as he scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Bobcats to their third 4-0 start in the last four years.
Offutt finished 4-of-12 from the field, but made his way to the free-throw line 15 times, sinking 13 shots from the stripe. He was joined in double figures by Ivo Baltic (16) and D.J. Cooper (12).
Ohio shot 21-of-49 (42.9 percent) from the field as a team and connected on 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) of its shots from 3-point range. The Bobcats were able to force the Pirates into 24 turnovers, which translated into 32 points. Ohio swatted away eight Hampton shots in the win.
Richmond comes to Athens after posting a 64-58 win over Wofford Tuesday night at home. The Spiders are off to their third 4-1 start in the last four seasons.
The Spiders' lone loss came on the road against Minnesota where it dropped a 72-57 decision to the Gophers. In the loss, Richmond trailed Minnesota by just one point at the half, but was outscored 42-28 in the second half.
Ohio and Richmond have both played Hampton, Wofford and UNC-Wilmington this season.
The Spiders handed UNCW its worst loss in school history after they posted a 101-58 victory over the Seahawks. Richmond also disposed of Hampton 68-58.
