Graduate Assistant - Defense

Alex Wanstrath enters his first year as a Graduate Assistant for Ohio Football this season, but his fifth season working closely with the Bobcat's defense squad.

Wanstrath began working with the Ohio Football team in February of 2007, when he began a three and a half year stint as a student coaching intern while pursuing his undergraduate degree in Athens. During his first year with the Bobcats, Wanstrath work under the tutelage of former Bobcats defensive line coach Carl Pelini, coaching former Bobcat Landon Cohen, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2008. Wanstrath worked specifically under Defensive Coordinator Jimmy Burrow for two seasons coaching the Ohio Safeties, including former Bobcat Mike Mitchell, who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the 47th overall pick in the 2009 draft.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Wanstrath choose to stay in Athens, spending the 2010 season working as an Assistant Strength Coach under long-time coach Sonny Sano. Wanstrath helped develop and implement a strength and conditioning plan for the Bobcats.

A native of South Lebanon, Ohio, Wanstrath is a graduate of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. He holds a degree from Ohio University in Education, focusing on Integrated Social Studies with a minor in History. Wanstrath resides in Athens.
