Knorr Completes Football Coaching Staff

2/23/2001

Ohio head football coach Brian Knorr today recently named Steve Russ outside linebackers backs coach and Everette Sands running backs coach. Knorr, who was named Ohio's 27th head coach on December 12, has now completed hiring his coaching staff.

Russ, while taking only his first collegiate coaching job, brings a wealth of experience to Ohio's defense. He played professionally for the two-time Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos after being drafted in the 7th round in 1995.

He began his playing career at the United States Air Force Academy, where he amassed over 200 tackles over his final two seasons. Russ earned second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors following the 1994 season. He won the Brian Bullard Award, which is the highest honor given to an Air Force player. After his senior season, Russ played in the Blue/Gray All-Star Game and the East/West Shrine Game.

Prior to joining the Broncos, Russ was the graduate assistant strength coach at Air Force. He was personally responsible for training three Falcon teams, while assisting 23 others.

"Steve was an outstanding player when I was a coach at the Air Force Academy," Knorr said. "He has gained great experience over the past four years playing professionally in the defensive structure that we plan to implement. Steve was also a part of two Super Bowl Winners with the Denver Broncos."

Sands comes to the Bobcats after two seasons coaching the running backs at his alma mater The Citadel. He assisted with recruiting, also serving as liaison to the school's admissions and athletics administration. Sands spent the summer of 2000 as a running backs intern for the Carolina Panthers.

Prior to joining The Citadel's staff, Sands was an assistant coach at Elon College. Additionally, he was the head strength and conditioning coach for the entire athletics department. He also served as the team's academic advisor.

"Everette brings a great background as an outstanding player and running backs coach for the past 5 years," Knorr said. "He will provide great leadership and toughness to the running back position."

The Bobcats will begin spring practice on March 28.
