Bobcats Finish Winter Workouts
March 21, 2007
ATHENS, Ohio - For the second straight year, the Bobcats had at least 35 players earn one of five different weightlifting honors during their recently completed winter training period. Junior fullback Jayson White (Erie, Pa.) was honored with the title of Super Iron Bobcat for the second straight year. Since the current system's implementation in 2001 by Director of Strength & Conditioning Sonny Sano, the only other players to win the award are Chad Brinker, Austen Everson, Ray Huston and Brad Young. The award, the highest honor an Ohio player can earn in the weight room, is based on maximum efforts on four lifts - the bench press, the squat, the power clean and the jerk. Senior running back Kalvin McRae (Decaturd, Ga.), sophomore quarterback Josh Febus (Dublin, Ohio) and senior linebacker Taj Henley (Richmond, Va.) earned special recognition as Iron Bobcats. The rest of the awards included nine Bobcat Award winners, 11 Green Award winners and 11 White Award winners. In additon to the honors, 11 positional records fell this past winter. White now holds the fullback record in both the back squat (556) and the power clean (360). His power clean effort is also the record for any Bobcat tight end, fullback or linebacker, also known as the combo group. Senior defensive lineman Alan Goff (Escondido, Calif.) broke both the defensive lineman and all lineman vertical jump record, hitting the 33.5-inch mark. In his first winter conditioning period with the Bobcats, junior linebacker Errik Ejike (Tyler, Texas) set both the linebacker and combo group vertical jump record with a leap of 37.5 inches. The Bobcats will put their strength to the test when the team begins spring practice on Monday, March 26. The annual Green & White game will be held on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m.
