Mike Kolakowski Named to Ohio Football Staff

Athens, Ohio - Former California University of Pennsylvania head coach Mike Kolakowski is joining the Ohio football coaching staff, Bobcat head coach Brian Knorr announced today. He takes the post of secondary coach Mike Sullivan, who resigned last month to take a defensive position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Kolakowski is no stranger to Athens or the Bobcat program. He served as the Bobcats' secondary coach and special teams coordinator from 1990-94 before moving to CUP as the Vulcans' defensive coordinator.

"Mike brings us experience in the secondary and also as a former head coach," said Knorr. "His familiarity with our university is a definite strong point. He comes highly recommended by people whose opinions I value."

Kolakowski's five-year record at California, an NCAA Division II school, is 21-32, but each of his teams the past three seasons won five games, a feat which had not been accomplished by the program since 1961 through 1963. CUP posted a 5-5 record last season under Kolakowski, the Vulcans' first non-losing campaign since 1987. California led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in rushing in each of the past three years.

Before becoming California's fourth full-time football head coach in November of 1996, Kolakowski was the Vulcans' defensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996. He inherited the PSAC's worst defense and in two years Cal ranked among the upper half of the league defensively. The 1996 team set a school record with 41 sacks.

Kolakowski began his coaching career as the freshman coach at Cornell in 1980. He served as a part-time defensive assistant at William and Mary from February 1981 through May 1982 before moving to Morehead State, where he was defensive line coach and then defensive coordinator. Kolakowski returned to William and Mary and was the Tribe's defensive coordinator from 1984 through 1988 before spending on season in a similar position at Maine.

Originally from Sparta, N.J., Kolakowski is a 1979 graduate of Ohio Northern, where he played wide receiver for four seasons. He holds a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.
