ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio linebacker Noah Keller was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List Monday by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The trophy is awarded annually to the nation’s best defensive player.
This honor marks the third time in four years that a Bobcat has been named to a preseason watch list for a major award (2007-Kalvin McRae-Maxwell, 2009-Taylor Price-Biletnikoff).
Central Michigan’s Nick Bellore and Temple’s Adrian Robinson were the only other Mid-American Conference student-athletes named to the list.
Keller was named a 2010 Preseason All-American by SI.com, NationalChamps.net and Consensus Draft Services (cdsdraft.com). Last season, the Kearney, Neb. native posted a MAC-high 155 tackles, which averaged out to 11.07 per game, the sixth-highest total nationally. He also finished with nine tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, three pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles.
The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the award on November 18.
The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be on Dec. 6 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Besides the 2010 winner being announced, the banquet will also celebrate the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, presented by CSX Intermodal. Defensive tackle Mike McCoy, a standout for Notre Dame, is being honored from the FWAA's 1969 All-America team.
