ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University quarterback Tyler Tettleton was named to the 2012 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List on Wednesday. The Davey O'Brien Award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate quarterback.
Tettleton (Norman, Okla.) was named to the preseason watch list after he authored one of the finest seasons in school history by an Ohio quarterback last year. Tettleton joins teammates Eric Herman (Oregon, Ohio), Matt Weller (Twinsburg, Ohio) and Travis Carrie (Antioch, Calif.), who were named to the Lombardi, Groza and Thorpe Preseason Watch Lists, respectively.
In 2011, Tettleton set 12 single season records, while in the process he became the first quarterback in school history to throw for over 3,000 yards. The Ohio signal-caller also accounted for 38 touchdowns, passing for 28 and rushing for 10. He also finished second on the team in rushing as he totaled 658 yards on the ground.
Following the year, Tettleton earned All-MAC Third Team, Phil Steele All-MAC Third Team and CollegeSportsMadness.com All-MAC Third Team honors.
Earlier this summer, Tettleton was among 33 players, who were selected to the Watch List for the 2012 College Football Performance Awards Quarterback Trophy. In addition, Tettleton was selected as one of four captains. He is the only junior selected among the four captains.
This year's list, which was compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee, features 34 of the nation's best college quarterbacks who were selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2012 college football season.
Appearing on the Watch List is not a requirement for a player to win the Davey O'Brien Award. Quarterbacks from all 124 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Oct. 22. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Monday, Nov. 19. The 2012 Davey O'Brien Winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 6.
