2009 Fall Camp-Day 5

Aug. 14, 2009

Head coach Frank Solich

On the first week of fall camp:

“I thought it was OK. I like the fact that we’re working hard and wanting to do things well. We’re putting a lot of schemes in and mixing in a lot of young guys. We were able to get the young guys a lot of reps in the spring, and we’re trying to build depth with the understanding that if guys get banged up then we’ll still have guys who can step in.”

On the status of different position battles after the first week of practice:

“We’ll probably have our first true scrimmage next week, so we’ll probably hold off on any decisions until then. We have a little bit of contact work before then, but the first scrimmage is when we’ll be able to get a better look. We’ll start adding together all the practices and scrimmages, and hopefully things will start to clear up at different positions.”

On young players who have been a surprise so far in fall camp:

“I thought two of our young receivers – Gary Fortune and Jerry Gross – have shown a lot of speed and quickness, as well the ability to run routes and make good catches. Both of those guys have a chance to contribute this year, as long as they continue to develop. On the offensive line, there are some younger guys who are going to be able to step in and give us some depth.”

On some of the bumps and bruises that have accumulated during the first week of practice:

“There’s nothing that looks like its going to be too extensive. Guys are trying to fight through some things, and we have to get them healthy. If a young guy needs reps to develop and he gets an injury, it’s really tough on him, but guys that have been around for a while know what they’re doing and don’t need as many reps.”
