Cornerback Mark Parson

On his take of the defense so far this preseason:

I think the defense is playing great. Everybody is flying around with a lot of intensity. We're actually faster this year so we're just trying to get everything stable out there.

On getting experience last season:

Oh it makes a big difference. Last year, I didn't know what to expect. Right now, the game is a lot slower for me. I'm feeling good. I just hope I can make some plays out there.

On the challenge of replacing T.J. Wright:

T.J. is a great player. He's so quick and he gets you amped up. I'm going to miss him but I know I can carry the torch.

On the secondary's relationship with the linebackers:

Well, with Taj (Henley) you have a veteran. He was behind Matt Muncy last year but he understands everything. The linebackers have a good grasp of things so there's really not a lot more pressure on them than normal.

Safety Mike Mitchell

On the defensive unit:

The defense is looking very fast and very aggressive. This year, we have a little bit more speed so we're definitely going to get after opposing offenses. I think you're going to see a lot of big hits, a lot of big plays and hopefully we'll be able to shut some teams down and win a MAC Championship.

On the loss of T.J. Wright:

It's obvious that he was a great player for us and, as a senior, gave us a lot of leadership. That said, Mark Parson has stepped up and been that leader for the corners. Idris Lawrence, Thad Turner, Julian Posey have also improved and really know their role.

On the improved speed of the secondary:

I think it's going to be hard for teams to get that deep ball over us. I think teams are going to have to be very patient on offense and try to nickel and dime us. We just have a lot of speed and experience back there.

On the depth of the safety position:

We're very deep at safety and it is very competitive. We have Steven Jackson, Ervin Jackson, Neil Jereb and a phenomenal athlete in Donovan Fletcher. He can go up and get a ball like any receiver on our team. He just makes spectacular catches out there.
