CLEVELAND, Ohio-Ohio quarterback Phil Bates was named Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week Monday by the league office following the Bobcats' 49-25 win over Bowling Green on Saturday.
Bates was an extremely versatile threat for Ohio as he ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries (12.9 per carry) and also completed a 47-yard bomb to wideout Donte Foster for 191 yards of total offense. Bates' first scoring run was a dazzling 62-yard jaunt that saw him skirt the sideline before outrunning several Falcon defenders on his way to the end zone. His second score was a 12-yard run to the corner of the end zone with 6:59 left in the contest.
For the season, Bates is Ohio's leading rusher with 303 yards on 38 carries (8.0 per carry). Through the air, he has also contributed 110 yards on seven completions.
The Bobcats will be back in action Saturday for Homecoming as Akron (0-6) visits Peden Stadium for a 2 p.m. ET kickoff.
