ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio Athletics, including the department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), have teamed up with the American Red Cross and the Athens County Food Pantry to provide relief for Athens County.
SAAC is a group of Ohio University student-athlete representatives who act as mediators between their fellow student-athletes, athletic administrators, faculty and the student body of Ohio University. The committee sponsors multiple community service projects in the Athens County area throughout the year.
The devastating tornadoes that struck Southeast Ohio on Thursday, September 16 brought despair to the 771 families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the violent storms. The worst damage was in Athens County where 58 homes were destroyed and 51 needed major repairs.
The event will take place at the Ohio football game against Akron on Saturday with kickoff slated for 2 p.m. ET. Student-athletes will be collecting food and donations at bins placed in Pepsi TailGreat Park and outside of gate 1, gate 3, and gate 4 at Peden Stadium.
The Red Cross monetary donations will aid relief efforts in the wake of last month's tornadoes and all food items will benefit the Athens County Food Pantry, which serves Athens County and the surrounding area. The Athens County Food Pantry is especially in need of the following food items: peanut butter, cereal, canned fruit, chunky soup, condensed soup, canned/boxed meals, canned meats, dried beans, canned vegetables, canned pastas, granola bars, rice, and spaghetti sauce.
