CLEVELAND – Ohio’s Rob Stover and Chip Cox have been selected as Mid-American Conference East Division award winners after contributing to the Bobcats' 27-10 victory over Akron on Saturday.
Stover, a Galena native, took the defensive award, while Cox, from Columbus, was the only nominee for special teams.
Stover was second on the team with eight tackles, including five solo. He posted four tackles for loss for 15 yards and had one sack for seven yards, a fumble-causing blitz against Akron QB Charlie Frye. After teammate Lamar Martin recovered the loose ball, the Bobcat offense was able to break a 10-10 tie with a 23-yard drive to paydirt.
Cox blocked a key 32-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter. The deflection prevented Akron from increasing its lead to 13-0 with 5:18 left before intermission. He added five tackles and two breakups in his role at cornerback.
Both players were part of a defense that allowed only x yards of total offense in the second half, including 11 on the ground.
Central Florida's Ryan Schneider threw for 360 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes, plus rushed for one to beat out Chad Brinker. The Bobcat senior rushed for a season-best 160 yards on a career-high 36 carries.
West Division winners were Michael Turner of Northern Illinois (offense), Tony Carr of Western Michigan (defense) and Tyrone Walker of Western Michigan (special teams).
