Dec. 18, 2009
ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio head coach Frank Solich was named Phil Steele’s Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Friday morning.
Solich spearheaded a remarkable turnaround for the Bobcats in 2009, leading the program to its second MAC East title in four seasons. This year’s Bobcats, picked fourth in the division in the league’s preseason voting, went 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference with a school-record 12 All-MAC selections. The squad also boasted All-Americans in junior punt returner LaVon Brazill and linebacker Noah Keller, along with Freshman All-Americans Matt Weller (kicker) and Gerald Moore (free safety).
The 2009 senior class has 28 victories to this point, the most for the program in 40 seasons.
Solich is 32-30 overall and 24-16 in the league in his five seasons in Athens. He was also named the league’s Coach of the Year by the Mid-American Conference in 2006, following Ohio’s first bowl trip in 38 years.
The Bobcats will face Marshall (6-6) in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit’s Ford Field on Saturday, Dec. 26 at 1 p.m.
