MONTVERDE, Fla. - The Ohio University men's golf team opened its spring season by splitting a match play duel with Bowling Green, 1.5-1.5, on Saturday at Bella Collina Country Club in the greater Orlando area.
The match featured a best ball format with three groups of two competing for each team.
The duo of senior Phil Gieseker (Saline, Mich.) and freshman Ty Herriott (Brandywine, Md.) picked up Ohio's match victory, winning 4 & 3 over the Falcons' Chris Melvin and Brett Rinker.
Senior Bradley Lucas (Worthington, Ohio) and sophomore Brad Burgess (St. Catharines, Ontario) halved their match with Holden Pahr and Ryan Triller, while freshman Peyton White (Huntersville, N.C.) and junior Andrew Mlynarski (St. Michaels, Md.) dropped a close match, one down, to Joshua Bialecki and Joe Cooper.
"There were tough conditions throughout today. It was cold and wet and we had to battle some wind," Gieseker said. "But win or lose in each match, our team was just focused on preparing for this week's MAC Match Play."
The Bobcats return to action Feb. 10-11 at the annual Mid-American Match Play competition at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
