Bobcats Drop Two Matches At Mid-American Match Play

DADE CITY, Fla. - The Ohio University men’s golf team competed in day one action of the Mid-American Match Play event in Dade City, Fla., and dropped two matches Monday. Both rounds were played on the Lake Jovita South Course.

The eighth-seeded Bobcats fell to No. 34 and top seed Ball State, 4.5-1.5, in the morning round. In the afternoon, Ohio faced fifth-seeded Miami and was upended by the RedHawks, 6-0.

Against the Cardinals, Ohio led 3-1-2 with many of the pairings making the turn, but the Bobcats could not hold on to the lead over the final nine holes.

Freshman Brad Burgess (St. Catharines, Ontario) earned a full point for the Bobcats after defeating Ball State’s Brodie Williams, 5 and 4. Sophomore Thomas Leech (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished his match all square with Tony Lazzara to earn half a point for Ohio.

Against the RedHawks, freshman Mike Engleman (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was competitive throughout his round, but couldn’t square his match on the final hole. Opponent Ben Peacock won the match, one up. Senior Michael Lamping (Dublin, Ohio) also played well for much of his match but ultimately fell to Brett Tomfohrde, who won, two up.

The Bobcats return to action Tuesday (Feb. 12) against second-seeded Akron on the final day of the Mid-American Match Play.
