MAC Match Play Round One
DADE CITY, Fla. - Ohio Men's Golf completed the first day of competition at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Match Play on Monday. The `Cats dropped their first pairing against the host Ball State Cardinals and are currently in the midst of the second round of the tournament, which had to be postponed on account of darkness.
The Bobcats ran into a strong Ball State squad in the first pairing of the competition, losing four of six matchups. Tyler Merkel beat Paul Grauer 6&5; Tony Lazzara defeated Connor Coldwater 4&3; Brodie Williams narrowly edged John Mlynarski 2&1 and Joe Gasser was two up on Brad Lucas. On the positive side for the Bobcats, Byron Firestone halved his competition with Ball State's T.J. Carpenter and Michael Lamping earned an impressive victory, beating Alex Stinson 4&3.
With the loss, Ohio matched up against the Toledo Rockets in the second round. The Rockets had met a similar fate as the Bobcats, losing in the first round to Northern Illinois by being defeated in four of the six matchups.
Ohio and Toledo's competition was suspended because of darkness at 7:47 p.m. Toledo currently holds a 1-0 lead, as Mike Lancaster defeated John Mlynarski 2&1. The remaining matches hang in the balance, however, with Grauer holding a one-hole edge over Dugan Murphy; Chris Selfridge holding a one-hole edge over Firestone; Patrick Cermak maintaining a one-hole lead over Lamping and Jamie Richardson holding a one-hole advantage over Lucas.
The second day of the competition will resume on 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning with a shotgun start. If the Bobcats advance to Round Three, this portion of the competition will begin at 8:30 a.m.
