OKATIE, S.C. - The Ohio University men's golf team kicked off its week in the greater Hilton Head area with a strong 4-1 victory over BIG EAST foe DePaul Saturday at Chechessee Creek Country Club.
"We came out today and we weren't hitting the ball well, but we hung tough on the front nine and played a lot better on the back nine," Head Coach Bob Cooley said.
All five Bobcat golfers earned at least a halve in their matches, with four student-athletes earning match victories.
Senior Michael Lamping (Dublin, Ohio) and freshman Brad Burgess (St. Catharines, Ontario) both led throughout their matches and won, 3 and 2, over their Blue Demon opponents.
Junior Connor Coldwater (Clarks Summit, Pa.) played steady throughout his match and converted a number of pars to stay in front throughout the back nine. Coldwater won his match, 2 and 1.
In addition, freshman Michael Engelman (Grand Blanc, Mich.) rallied from a four-down deficit after 10 holes to win four of the final eight holes and halve his match.
Senior Byron Firestone (Canton, Ohio) also halved his match to round out the results for Ohio.
The Bobcats now make the short trip to Hilton Head, S.C., to compete at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Feb. 18-19. It will be the team's first stroke play event of the 2013 spring season.
