PINEHURST, N.C. – Led by senior Byron Firestone’s superb effort, the Ohio University men’s golf team sits in 13th place after round one action at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Sunday.

Firestone (Canton, Ohio) matched his career low round by firing an even par 71 in his opening 18 holes. He is tied for ninth with John Dawson of Old Dominion and Steve Skurla of Villanova.

It marks the second 71 Firestone has carded this season, as the senior also hit the mark in the first round of the Marshall Invitational this past fall. Old Dominion leads the event after shooting a combined two-over 286. The Bobcats carded a 22-over 306 in round one.

Junior Connor Coldwater (Clarks Summit, Pa.) is tied for 57th place after putting together a six-over par 77 on Pinehurst’s No. 6 course.

Senior Michael Lamping (Dublin, Ohio) and sophomore Andrew Mlynarski (St. Michaels, Md.) each carded an opening-round 79 (+8), and the duo sits in a tie for 70th place.

Rounding out the Ohio quintet, freshman Brad Burgess (St. Catharine’s, Ohio) posted a 14-over 85 and is in 89th place.

The Bobcats continue competition Monday and will play the famed Pinehurst No. 2, which hosts the men’s U.S. Open in 2014.
