PINEHURST, N.C. – Ohio posted its best round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Tuesday, carding a 295 to claim an 11th place finish at the 54-hole event.
Over the three-day tournament, the Bobcats posted a combined 76-over par 924 (306-323-295). No. 43 Ball State won the event with a 54-hole combined total of 885 (293-310-282, -2).
Byron Firestone (Canton, Ohio) was Ohio’s top finisher. The senior fired a final round 76 (+5) and finished 12-over par (71-77-76-224) for the tournament.
“Byron continues to improve for us this season,” Head Coach Bob Cooley said. “He had a good tournament this week.”
Junior Connor Coldwater (Clarks Summit, Pa.) began the final round tied for 54th, but carded an impressive one-over par 72 Tuesday to improve 18 spots and tie for 36th place. The finish was Coldwater’s best of the 2012-13 season. He posted a cumulative score of 231 (77-82-72, +19).
Freshman Brad Burgess showed similar improvement in final round action. The St. Catharines, Ontario, native went from a tie for 81st after 36 holes to a tie for 65th after registering a one-over par 72 on day three of competition. Burgess posted a three-day total of 238 (85-81-72, +27).
“Connor and Brad both improved from tee to green today,” Cooley said. “It’s nice to see them continuing to learn and grow from round to round.”
Andrew Mlynarski (St. Michaels, Md.) rounded out the Ohio group in a tie for 79th place, as the sophomore recorded a final round 80 (+9). He finished the tournament at +30 (79-83-80).
Senior Michael Lamping (Dublin, Ohio) withdrew from the tournament on Monday and did not compete in final round action.
The Bobcats return to action April 6-7 at the NYX Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
