BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ohio University men’s golf team earned its best finish of the 2012-13 season Sunday at the NYX Hoosier Invitational, finishing fifth out of 18 teams at the Indiana University Golf Course.
The Bobcats posted their best combined 54-hole total since April 2012 with a 27-over par 879 (299-287-293). The team’s final round 293 (+9) moved the ‘Cats up a spot from sixth to fifth.
“This was our best tournament of the year, by far,” head coach Bob Cooley said. “We played extremely well in the second round and performed well during the third round, when the course played more difficult. We’re moving in the right direction.”
Host Indiana won the event with a combined two-under 850 (279-282-289), while Illinois State (855, +3) and Michigan (865, +13) rounded out the top three.
A trio of Bobcats paced Ohio with 54-hole totals of 6-over par (219) to tie for 20th place.
Senior Byron Firestone (Canton, Ohio) posted his team-leading third top-20 finish of the season after carding a final-round 74 (+3) to go along with his rounds of 74 and 71 on day one of competition.
Firestone registered a team-best 11 birdies on the weekend, which was tied for fourth-best among all 90 competitors. He played the par 5s at four-under par for the tournament.
Connor Coldwater (Clarks Summit, Pa.) made two birdies in his final round and posted 10 birdies and an eagle over 54 holes of play. The junior finished at six-over par with round scores of 72, 74 and 73. His finish marked his first top-20 performance of the season.
“The greens were slow and bumpy, and I thought Byron and Connor read their putts well to make some nice birdies,” Cooley said.
Senior Michael Lamping (Dublin, Ohio) fired a team-best 72 (+1) in round three and made a team-leading 36 pars on the weekend. Lamping improved each round for the Bobcats, with scores of 74 in round one, 73 in round two and his final round total of 72. Lamping’s t-20th finish also was his best of the season.
Brad Burgess (St. Catharines, Ontario) was Ohio’s fourth-best finisher, as the freshman placed t-32nd with a nine-over par total of 222 (79-69-74). It marked the best finish and the best 54-hole total of Burgess’ career.
“I hit the ball really well this weekend and improved when my putts started to drop,” Burgess said. “I struggled in the first round, but hit a couple of 20-foot putts in round two and was more focused and patient with my shots from there.”
Senior Bradley Lucas (Worthington, Ohio) rounded out the Bobcat finishes with a 54-hole total of 253 (82-87-84, +40).
The Bobcats return to action next Monday and Tuesday (April 15-16) at the Northwestern Invitational April. The tournament will be played at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill.
