BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Freshman John Mlynarski fired a four-under 140 on Monday to grab a share of the 36-hole lead at Stone Ridge Golf Club, leading the Ohio University men's golf team to a total of 587 (+11) and sole possession of second place at the Piper Intercollegiate.

The Bobcats trail host Bowling Green by a single stroke (586, +10), while holding a three-stroke edge on third-place Eastern Kentucky and Cleveland State (590, +14). Ohio recorded a field-low 291 (+3) in the opening round, and held a three-stroke lead over Bowling Green, Cleveland State and Eastern Kentucky after 18 holes.

"We played very well today," Ohio head coach Bob Cooley said. "We're very happy to have been leading the tournament after the first round, and we're also very happy to have a chance to win. They've only had one rain here, so the ground is pretty hard, but we did a good job of overcoming that."

Mlynarski (St. Michaels, Md.), playing in his first collegiate tournament, fired back-to-back rounds of 70 on Monday to finish the day four strokes under par (140) and tied with Bowling Green's Matt Schneider at the top of the leader board. A 2008 U.S. Amateur qualifier, Mlynarski is one of just four golfers in red numbers after the first day of competition.

Junior Stewart Jamieson (Worthington, Ohio) rode a first-round 70 (-2) to a share of fifth place at the end of day one, finishing with a career-best 36-hole total of 145 (+1). The performance was seven strokes better than his previous two-round best, a 152 at last season's Marshall Invitational.

A second-round 71 (-1) moved junior Chad Warmbein (McMurray, Pa.) into a tie for ninth after the first day of play, part of an eight-player pile-up at 148 (+4). Classmate Tim Gusweiler (Loveland, Ohio) is tied for 41st place with a total of 155 (+11), while sophomore Mark Reinhold (Cincinnati, Ohio) sits in a tie for 60th after carding a 17-over 161.

Playing as an individual, freshman Paul Grauer (Dublin, Ohio) is tied for 19th at 151 (+7) after posting a one-over 73 in the second round. Sophomore Chuck Nettles (McMurray, Pa.), also in the field as an individual, also fired a second-round 73 on Monday, earning a share of 30th with a score of 153 (+9) after the first day of play.

"We've been playing the par fives really well, which is key when you want to have success at a golf tournament," Cooley said. "We've had some bad holes, and haven't played the par threes particularly well, but we've responded well and pulled ourselves together. We're leading some good teams after two rounds, and it'll take a good round tomorrow to win the tournament."

The final round of the Piper Intercollegiate will commence at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
