HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Carding its best round since September, the Ohio men’s golf team placed fourth at the 36th Annual Marshall Invitational on Saturday. The Bobcats posted a team score of 286 as three Ohio golfers finished at par or better in the final round of the two-day event at the par-71, 6,446 yard Guyan Golf and Country Club.
Louisville set tournament records in lowest third round (273), lowest total 18 holes (273) and lowest 54-hole total (837) to win the 16-team tournament. The Cardinals beat the previous final round record by five strokes set by Ohio State in 2004 and they topped the Buckeyes’ 2001 three-round score by two strokes. Their 273 tied Illinois for the lowest total 18 holes, which was set in 2001. Xavier finished in second place, four strokes back with an 11-under 841 (285-277-279), while the Ohio State placed third at 849 (276-286-287).
The Bobcats’ fourth-place score of 865 (289-290-286) placed them ahead of Mid-American Conference rivals Akron (867), Ball State (873), Bowling Green (876), Eastern Michigan (877), Marshall (886), Northern Illinois (889) and Miami (889). The 286 in the final round was Ohio’s best score since firing a 284 in the second round of the Fourth Annual John Piper Intercollegiate on Sept. 13.
Sophomore Blake Russell (Dublin) led the Bobcats with a 54-hole score of 214 (72-72-70) to tie for 14th. Junior Jon Johasky (Lower Burrell, Pa.) tied for 19th with a 217 (70-71-76) while sophomore Mark Cimarolli (Pittsburgh) tied for 23rd with a 218 (75-72-71).
Also competing for Ohio were sophomore Ryan Siekmann (Dublin), who tied for 44th at 224 (72-81-71), and junior Brian Elsea (Columbus), who tied for 49th with a 225 (76-75-74).
“This was a total team performance,” said Ohio head coach Bob Cooley. “Everybody contributed. We’re still four weeks away from the MAC Championships but I think this gives us a little confidence.”
Individually, Blake Sattler of Akron closed out a record-breaking tournament with a final-round 65 to take medalist honors. Sattler’s 202 (69-68-65) beat the previous 54-hole best score set by Ohio State’s Kevin Hall in 2004 by four strokes.
The next competition for the Bobcats will be the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate at the Firestone Country Club in Akron on April 16-17.
