Both Ohio golf teams posted strong second rounds after struggling in the opening rounds of their respective 15-team tournaments on Saturday. The Bobcat men stand in eighth place at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate in Akron and the Ohio women are 11th at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus heading into Sunday’s final rounds.
On the par-72, 7,060-yard North Course at the Firestone Country Club, the Bobcats carded rounds of 317 and 290 for a 36-hole score of 607, 31 strokes behind event-leader Toledo (283-293). The Ohio men are being led by sophomore Grant Christman (Columbus), who is tied for 16th after posting rounds of 79 and 70 of Saturday.
Behind Christman is Blake Russell, who is tied for 25th with a 151. The sophomore from Dublin tied his career-best round with a 67 on Saturday following an opening-round 84. Sophomore Mark Cimarolli (Pittsburgh) is next with a 155 (77-78) while junior Jon Johasky (Lower Burrell, Pa.) and sophomore Ryan Siekmann (Dublin) are both tied for 53rd with two-round scores of 157.
On the women’s side, the Bobcats carded rounds of 324 and 311 on the par-73, 6,201-yard Scarlet Course at Ohio State University. Michigan State leads the field with a 36-hole mark of 588 (293-295).
Ohio junior Ana Brown (West Chester) is tied for 34th with a 157 (83-74) while junior Julie Tomlinson (Noblesville, Ind.) and sophomore Shanna Siefke (Toledo) are tied for 43rd three strokes back at 160.
Bobcat senior Sara Ann Palmer (Dublin) is tied for 61st with a 164 (78-86) and sophomores Meredith Waterston (Bloomington, Minn.) and Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington) are tied for 64th at 165. Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Katie Stafford (Phoenix) is 92nd with a 179 (90-89).
Both tournaments will wrap up with a final 18 holes on Sunday.
