STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Ohio University sophomore Mark Cimarolli (Pittsburgh) tied for 10th and the Bobcat men’s golf team placed fourth out of 15 teams at the 29th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Penn State Blue Course on Saturday. Ohio shot a final-round 290 to finish with a 54-hole score of 867, which was 24 strokes behind host Penn State (843), six strokes back of Maryland (861) and just one stroke behind Towson (866).
After carding rounds of 71 and 74 on Friday, Cimarolli shot a two-under 70 Saturday on the 6,535-yard, par 72 course. His 54-hole score of 215 tied his Sept. 27-28 performance at the Cardinal Intercollegiate for the best tournament of his career.
Bobcat junior Brian Elsea (Columbus) also placed in the top 20 by carding a 217 (73-72-72) to tie for 17th, his highest finish since tying for fourth at the Oct. 24-25 Georgetown Hoya Invitational.
Also competing for Ohio were junior Jon Johasky (Lower Burrell, Pa.), who tied for 27th with a 220 (72-73-75) and sophomores Blake Russell (Dublin) and Ryan Siekmann (Dublin), who both tied for 32nd at 221.
“All of our guys looked good at times,” said Bobcat head coach Bob Cooley. “We did a lot of really good things this weekend. We showed improvement but we still have some things to work on before next week’s MAC Championships.”
For the 13th time in the 14-year history of the Rutherford Intercollegiate, Penn State won the tournament on its home course. Maryland’s John Eades became the first non-Nittany Lion to win individual medalist honors by finishing 16-under-par with a 200 (69-67-64).
Ohio begins the Mid-American Conference Championships with two rounds on Thursday, followed by a round each on Friday and Saturday at the Medallion Golf Club in Westerville. The Bobcats, who finished second out of 10 teams at last year’s conference tournament, will be looking for their first MAC title since 1980.
