WESTERVILLE, Ohio – At the Medallion Golf Club this week, the Ohio men’s golf team will be trying to claim its first Mid-American Conference title since 1980. The Bobcats have finished runners-up in two of the last three MAC Championships.
Each of the 10 teams competing will play 36 holes on Thursday and then 18 holes on both Friday and Saturday. The course has three nine-hole components and for this tournament, the #1 tee will be the Rookery and the #10 tee will be the Meadows. Play will begin each day at 8 a.m. on those two holes.
Ohio will rely on a trio of sophomores – Mark Cimarolli (Pittsburgh), Blake Russell (Dublin) and Ryan Siekmann (Dublin) – and juniors Brian Elsea (Columbus) and Jon Johasky (Lower Burrell, Pa.) at the 72-hole event. Cimarolli, the reigning MAC Golfer of the Week, leads the squad with a 74.10 strokes-per-round average while Russell and Siekmann are tied with 74.30 averages this year. The other two are not far behind as Elsea boasts a 74.71 mark and Johasky maintains a 74.75 average.
“We have the talent to win but we need to battle the nerves and play smart,” said Bobcat head coach Bob Cooley. “I saw some real positive things at Penn State last weekend. We’re going to need to drive the ball well and putt well and stay away from the big numbers.”
