ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University Director of Golf Bob Cooley announced on Thursday that Phil Gieseker (Saline, Mich.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to begin competing for the Bobcats in the 2009-10 season.

A product of Saline High School, Gieseker finished fifth at the 2006 state finals to help lead the team to a Division I state crown. He also added an eighth-place finish at the state tournament in 2008.

Gieseker has also been successful on the junior circuit, winning the 2006 Michigan Junior Am and reaching the quarterfinals of the 2008 edition of the event. He also shot back-to-back rounds of 71 to close out the 2008 AJGA Randy Wise Junior Open and earn a ninth-place finish.

"Phil is one of the best high school players to come out of the state of Michigan this year, and we're extremely happy to have him join our program," Cooley said. "In addition to his skill on the course, he's a good person and a good student, and he should fit in well on our team."

The Bobcats recently wrapped up the 2008-09 season with a fourth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championship in Indianapolis. More information on the 2009-10 season will be released at a later date.
