ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University wrestling team defeated the University of Buffalo Saturday evening 26-13 inside the Convocation Center. With the win, Ohio improved to 5-5 on the year and moved to 3-2 in Mid-American Conference competition.
Redshirt freshman Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) continued his dominating 2012-13 campaign for the Bobcats as he rallied from behind in the final minute of the third period against No. 16 John-Martin Cannon to pick up a thrilling 8-4 victory.
Walters' victory was his team-best 26th win and his sixth straight on year. His two losses are also the fewest on the squad. In addition, Walters' win gave Ohio a 12-10 team advantage and the lead for good.
Two bouts earlier, No. 29 Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) logged the first of two pins for the Bobcats. The redshirt freshman earned the fall of UB's Wally Maziarz in the first period (1:49). With the win, Chino improved to 17-8 on the season. Maziarz entered the match with 22 wins on the year.
Junior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) also continued to say hot as he logged his team-leading eighth-consecutive win. The No. 15-ranked Bobcat captured his 25th win on the year after he earned a pin at the 2:41 mark of the first period.
True freshman Joe Munos (South St. Paul, Minn.), redshirt junior Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.), and No. 32 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) also logged wins for the Bobcats.
Ohio returns to action tomorrow inside the Convocation Center against Michigan State. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
