ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University wrestling team claimed the final four bouts against Michigan State Sunday afternoon to earn a 22-16 victory over the Spartans Sunday afternoon inside the Convocation Center on Senior Day.

The win improved Ohio to 6-5 on the year and completed a 2-0 weekend for the Bobcats. In addition, Ohio picked up its first win over Michigan State since the 1929-30 season.

Ohio trailed 16-6 with four bouts remaining in the match. Redshirt junior Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.) highlighted the Bobcats' furious comeback as he pinned No. 18 ranked John-Martin Cannon from Michigan State to put the `Cats ahead 19-16.

Garringer's pin came on the heels of back-to-back wins from teammates Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and No. 17 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio). Hightower claimed the 165 match with a major decision to cut the Spartans' lead to 16-10. Walters followed and claimed his team-best seventh straight decision to make the count 16-13.

Following Garringer's pin No. 32 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) secured the Ohio win with a 7-4 decision over MSU's Luke Jones.

Ohio got on the board at 133 thanks to a victory by Joe Munos (South St. Paul, Minn.) over MSU's Brandon Fifield. Munos' 5-3 triumph gave him his second win on the weekend.

The Bobcats also got a 7-2 win from freshman Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio) as he picked up his third victory in his last four bouts.

The match began at heavyweight with No. 15 Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) facing off against No. 9 Michael McClure, who entered the bout, having lost just twice this season. Johnson's meeting with McClure marked the second time this season the two individuals had met. The two met earlier in the finals of the MSU Open with McClure coming away with the win.

Sunday's match followed a similar storyline, but not without a strong fight from Johnson. Despite the strong effort Johnson dropped his first decision in eight bouts, falling by a slim 3-2 margin.

Ohio will take a week off before traveling to Clarion on Friday, Feb. 8. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
