CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Ohio University wrestling team (9-3. 4-3) tallied a win and a loss on Saturday inside UNI's McLeod Center. The Bobcats posted a strong 32-6 win over South Dakota State University, but dropped a 25-15 decision to No. 5 University of Northern Iowa.
Senior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio), junior Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio), and redshirt sophomore Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) picking up wins against both teams.
With the two wins, Johnson and Wellington both remained undefeated in conference competition. Johnson also tallied his 10th fall on the year as he pinned SDSU's JJ Everard.
Johnson has now posted seven-consecutive wins and increased his team-best record to 27-4.
In the Bobcats first dual against SDSU, Ohio grasped a strong lead as it posted victories in the 184 through 125 weight classes opening up an 18-0 lead.
Sophomore KeVon Powell (Romeoville, Ill.) picked up his third fall of the season against SDSU's Ben Gillette in a time of 6:20.
SDSU found its first victory at 133 with Will Games defeating Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio), 7-0. The Jackrabbits would only win one other bout against Ohio, with No. 17 Cody Pack defeating Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) at 157.
Junior Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) also highlighted competition as he picked up his third-consecutive victory for the Bobcats at 165, improving his record to 25-8, entering the matchup against UNI.
Ohio won two of its first three bouts to take a 6-5 lead over UNI. Wellington and Johnson both tallied wins for Ohio.
UNI charged back by winning the next three decisions to open up a 19-6 advantage. No. 6 Dylan Peters pinned Powell at 125 and No. 1 Joe Colon earned a technical fall versus Squire to highlight the three-match stretch for UNI.
Claxton and Chino both won by decision at 149 and 157 to cut UNI's lead to 19-12, but a fall by Northern Iowa's Cooper Moore against Hightower ensured the UNI win.
The match ended with an Ohio win by Walters, earning his fourth-consecutive victory.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 as it welcomes Clarion to the Convocation Center.
