Ohio Stuns #12 Central Michigan, 21-17

Feb. 4, 2011

ATHENS, Ohio-The Ohio wrestling team snapped a 12-match losing streak to Central Michigan Saturday night to stun the 12th-ranked Chippewas 21-17 in the Convocation Center.

Ohio improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while CMU dropped to 5-8 and 1-1 in the league.

The Bobcats got pins from Gabe Ramos at 125 and Nick Purdue at 174 to help the cause. Purdue's victory came over fifth-ranked Ben Bennett in four minutes, 38 seconds to give Ohio an 18-12 lead. That lead increased by one when CMU was deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the bout.

Ohio's 20th-ranked Germane Lindsey and 16th-ranked Erik Schuth also recorded victories by decision at 141 and 197, respectively, but Casey Gordon's bout with CMU's Ryan Cubberly at 157 proved to be the evening's most exciting contest. The two went to overtime before Gordon captured the decision after being awarded a penalty point following another stalling warning that was issued to Cubberly.

The win was Ohio's first over the Chippewas since Jan. of 1998 when the Bobcats picked up a 22-17 victory in Mt. Pleasant.

The Bobcats travel to Clarion Sunday for a 2 p.m. ET dual match.
