ATHENS, Ohio-The Ohio wrestling team defeated Eastern Michigan 28-9 Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center and, by the end of the day, held a share of the Mid-American Conference's regular season title.
By virtue of 15th-ranked Central Michigan's (4-1 MAC) 20-14 victory over Kent State (4-1) on Sunday, the trio all finished in a tie atop the league's standings. Ohio knocked off CMU 21-17 in Athens on Feb. 4, while KSU handed the Bobcats a 30-6 defeat Feb. 11 in Kent.
As for the events at the Convo, 20th-ranked Germane Lindsey won by major decision at 141 and Brad Squire followed with a win at 149 to give the Bobcats a 7-3 lead.
However, the Eagles (11-11, 0-5 MAC) captured the next two bouts to pull ahead 9-7, before 16th-ranked Nick Purdue triumphed 2-0 at 174 to edge Ohio back in front 10-9.
That was when Ryan Garringer stunned Eastern's Khodar Holbollah at 184, pinning him in just 32 seconds to give Ohio the 16-9 advantage.
16th-ranked Erik Schuth and Jeremy Johnson added back-to-back victories at 197 and heavyweight, respectively, to put Ohio up 22-9 before Eastern forfeited the final bout at 125 for the final margin.
The Bobcats will be back in action at the MAC Championship, which will be held at Northern Illinois (DeKalb, Ill.) on March 5th and 6th.
