Wrestling in Fourth After Day One of MAC Championship
March 3, 2007
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Ohio wrestling team ended day one of the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championship in fourth place out of six teams Saturday with a team score of 25.00 points at Alumni Arena. The Bobcats, who went 16-8 in dual meets in the regular season and 2-3 in MAC dual meets, saw all 10 of their wrestlers bounced from the championship bracket in the first day of action. Seven of Ohio's 10 wrestlers are still standing in their respective consolation brackets. The Bobcats had all 10 wrestlers alive in the championship bracket following the morning action and heading into the semifinal round Saturday afternoon. "It was a disappointing semifinal round," Head Coach Joel Greenlee said. "I think we are better than we showed. We should have probably had four guys win in the semifinals and just didn't get it done." Central Michigan, gunning for a sixth-consecutive MAC Championship title, is in first place after day one of the competition with 62.50 team points. Northern Illinois is in second with 46.50 followed by Kent State with 40.50, Ohio with 25.00, Eastern Michigan with 23.50, and Buffalo with 10.50 team points. The Chippewas have the most wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket with seven followed by Northern Illinois and Kent State with five apiece. Three Bobcats posted 2-1 records on the day, including senior heavyweight Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio). Adelman started the day with a 6-0 shutout of Northern Illinois' Dave Benner but then fell from the championship bracket with a 5-2 loss to Kent State's Jermail Porter. Adelman bounced back with a decisive 7-1 victory over Eastern Michigan's Charlie Walker. The senior Bobcat is now 20-9 on the season and will face Benner again Sunday for the third place crown at 285. Adelman is 12-2 in competition since Dec. 29. Sophomore Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) also went 2-1 Saturday at 157 pounds and started with a 7-2 win over Buffalo's Scott Rendos in the championship bracket. After a tough, 5-3 loss in overtime to Kent State's Kurt Gross, Frerichs rebounded with a 5-2 victory over Northern Illinois' Kalen Knull. Frerichs will take on Eastern Michigan's Cory Mancuso in the third place match tomorrow. The sophomore Bobcat is 17-8 this season. Redshirt freshman Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) was the third Bobcat with a 2-1 record Saturday. Tucker began his day with an 18-3, technical fall victory over Central Michigan's Brandon Carter. Carter was ranked 20th in the nation at 149 pounds in the Feb. 13 NWCA rankings. After a 9-5 loss to Eastern Michigan's Jermain Thompson, Tucker finished his day with a 15-6, major decision win over Buffalo's Jason Hilliard. Tucker, who is now 11-19 on the season, will battle Carter again Sunday for third place at 149 pounds. "I thought Clay wrestled real well," Greenlee said. "In that first match he faced a ranked guy and beat him by technical fall. He wrestled another great match with Thompson too." Junior Antione Love (Gahanna, Ohio) was one of four Bobcats to earn one win and one loss on the day. After an 8-6 loss to Northern Illinois' Danny Burk, Love pinned Buffalo's Nate Rock in 4:55. He moved to 22-8 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in matches decided by a pin. Love will take on Eastern Michigan's Josh Lewis Sunday for third place at 174 pounds. Redshirt freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) will have to wait until next year for his chance at a 165-pound MAC Championship after a 1-1 record Saturday. Ison dropped his first contest of the day by a score of 5-3 to Central Michigan's Mike Miller. He answered with an 8-7 win over Buffalo's Mike Ragusa to advance to the third place match, where he will take on Eastern Michigan's Nick Conklin Sunday. Ison is 30-11 this season wrestling at 165 pounds. Sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) will also battle for a third place title Sunday after a 1-1 record in day one of the competition. The 133-pound Bobcat started the day with a 3-1 loss to Kent State's Danny Mitcheff but answered with a 3-1 win of his own over Eastern Michigan's Chris Jenkins. Jackson is now 14-8 on the season and will battle Central Michigan's Conor Beebe Sunday for third place at 133 pounds. Freshman Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) is the final Bobcat remaining in competition after a 1-1 performance Saturday. Morton suffered a 13-5, major decision loss to Northern Illinois' Pat Castillo before recording a 9-5 win over Buffalo's Dan Bishop. Morton, who is now 11-15 on the season, will take on Central Michigan's Luke Smith Sunday for third place at 125 pounds. "Morton wrestled well today," Greenlee said. Senior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) and sophomores Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) and Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) were all bounced from the competition without a win. Madsen carried the No. 1 seed into the event at 141 pounds. The Bobcats will finish up competition at the 2007 MAC Wrestling Championship on Sunday. The action is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. from Alumni Arena.
