Lindsey Achieves All-American Status, Advances to Third Day
March 19, 2010
OMAHA, Neb.- Ohio Wrestling added another All-American to its already storied history on Friday at the second day of the 2010 NCAA Championships. Germane Lindsey guaranteed himself the honors (and at the least an eighth place finish) with his performance during the first two days of competition. After Lindsey’s impressive two-win performance on the first day of the championships, he matched up early on Friday against No. 6 Montell Marion of Iowa. The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, put up a valiant effort in the bout, earning a takedown in the final seconds of regulation to take a late 5-4 lead. Marion’s 67 seconds of riding time then pushed the bout into overtime. Just a few seconds into the sudden victory period, the sophomore from Iowa earned the winning takedown. Lindsey was able to bounce back in the next round, taking a nail-biting 9-7 decision over Michael Mangrum of Oregon State. Trailing 5-4 at the end of the first period, Lindsey came back strong to win five of the next seven points—including an escape and two takedowns—to win the bout. By winning this bout, Lindsey became Ohio’s first All-American wrestler since Jake Percival earned his fourth such honor in 2005. Motivated further by this success, Lindsey wrestled an incredible bout in the next round, upending No. 11 Christopher Diaz of Virginia Tech with a 4-3 decision. Diaz compiled three escapes in the bout by Lindsey’s two takedowns proved to be too much. Lindsey will wrestle the remainder of his tournament on Saturday, beginning at approximately 11 a.m. Eastern Time. “Germane is a guy that you can never count out,” said head coach Joel Greenlee. “He’s tough, he’s strong, he listens to everything the coaches’ say…he is hard to beat.” Ison (Batavia, Ohio) had a very solid day on Friday, winning two bouts. He defeated Jeff James of Oklahoma by a 7-4 decision in his first bout of the day, which he followed up with a very impressive 7-5 decision over Purdue’s No. 9 Luke Manuel. Ison came out of the gate quickly in the first period of this bout, scoring an escape, a takedown and a two-point near-fall in the first three minutes. He was able to hold off Manuel for the rest of the match, only allowing him one escape and a takedown the rest of the way. “He was in the round of 12,” said Greenlee. “If he wins that match he’s an All-American. He’s one of the guys that kind of got us started to where we are at now and he has worked really hard while accomplishing some great things during his career.” The redshirt senior’s stellar Bobcat career came to an end on Friday night when he lost a 6-3 decision to No. 10 Jordan Blanton of Illinois. Ison finished his career at Ohio with a very impressive 79-32 record. Nick Purdue’s solid 2009-10 season came to an end on Friday, as the redshirt sophomore from Genoa, Ohio, lost a close 3-2 decision to James McCroskey of Chattanooga. Purdue finished the season with a 28-12 record, a mark that includes a 5-0 tally in bouts that were decided by pin. See below for full Ohio day two results:
