DES MOINES, Iowa - Five members of the Ohio University wrestling team opened competition in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Championships on Thursday inside Wells Fargo Arena.

Redshirt freshmen Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill), Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) and Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) each posted victories in the first session. Junior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) also collected a win in the opening session. With the wins, all four student-athletes advanced to the second round.

In the opening session, Ohio posted a 4-1 record in the opening session, earning six points which was good enough for 12th place. At the end of day one competition, Ohio sits in 25th-place with six points.

Chino posted the Bobcats first win of the afternoon as he defeated returning All-American and overall No. 11 seed, Walter Peppelman of Harvard in the 157 weight class. With the win, Chino earned Ohio three points. In the second round, Chino, suffered a 9-0 major decision to Oklahoma State's Alex Dieringer.

Walters earned a victory over Chad Welch of Purdue at the 174 weight class to pick up his 37th win on the year and collect his 15th-consecutive triumph on the year. In the next round, Walters fell 8-3 to Robert Kokesh from Nebraska to move into the consolation bracket.

Wellington followed with a win by decision over James Fox of Harvard in the 197 weight class, but came up short in the following round, falling by major decision to Kent State's Dustin Kilgore.

Johnson began his journey to earn back-to-back All-America honors as began the tournament with a 4-3 decision over James Lawson from Penn State in the heavyweight class. In the second round, Oklahoma State's Alan Gelogaev pinned Johnson.

Freshman Kevon Powell dropped his match to Nicholas Megaludis of Penn State by tech fall in the 125 weight class, giving Ohio its only loss on the opening session. He was then eliminated in the consolation bracket as he was defeated 7-6 by NC State's Joe DeAngelo.

Ohio returns to action Friday morning at 11 a.m. Day two action can been seen on ESPNU/ESPN3.com.
