EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomores Michael Duckworth and Jeremy Johnson each won their respective weight classes to highlight Saturday's action as the Ohio University wrestling completed competition at the 2011 Michigan State Open.
Duckworth (Liberty, Ind.) claimed first place in the 174-pound weight class after he pinned his final two opponents to finish his bracket a perfect 5-0. Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) claimed the 285-pound bracket as he went 5-0. In his final three matches, Johnson defeated opponents from Northwestern, Michigan and Michigan State.
Freshmen Drew Hammer (Loveland, Ohio) and Sparty Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) also had strong showings on Saturday as they each posted runner-up performances.
Hammer won his first three matches to advance to the semifinal match. In the semifinal bout, Hammer defeated Central Michigan's Ty Davis in overtime to advance to the final bout where he would suffer a pin to Edinboro's Mike DePalma.
Chino posted a 5-1 mark and advanced to the final following a victory over Kent State's Andrew Candellio (10-5). In the final, he would drop an 8-4 decision to Nick Carr from Kent State.
Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio), Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio), Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio), Cody Rodgers (Mechanicsburg, Ohio), Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) also fared well as they posted top five finishes, placing fifth (149), fourth (165), fourth (184), third (197), fifth (157) and third (174), respectively.
Ohio returns to action on Dec. 3 as it opens up Mid-American Conference play at Central Michigan. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
